St. Mary Redcliffe Church, Bristol: Lighting System Upgrades

Dating back to 1185, St. Mary Redcliffe Church in Bristol is considered one of the country’s finest and largest parish churches. It is an outstanding example of English Gothic Architecture, and is so imposing it is often mistaken by tourists to be the equally infamous Bristol Cathedral.

As part of a long-term ongoing project to modernise and improve facilities within the church, dubbed ‘Project 450‘, Enlightened were contracted to design and install extensive upgrades to the lighting and AV systems in the entirety of the church, from the stunning West Window to the Lady Chapel and everything in-between.

The extensive multi-phase project was started in 2019 and as of 2024 is still running. A brief list of all works undertaken so far can be found below:

Phase 1:

Upgrading all chandeliers to dimmable and programmable LED systems using Pharos control, including wireless control panel. Design and installation of electrical system upgrades including RAL colour-matched containment.

Phase 2:

Upgrade lighting in mid-level arches across the church, including North and South Naves and Transepts and the Crossing. Upgrade key lighting for various architectural features including Pulpit. Focus all fixtures and program into previously installed Pharos control system.

Phase 3:

Upgrade all lighting in high-level Clerestory windows including North and South Naves, Transepts, and Chancels. Focus and program into previously installed Pharos control system.

Phase 4:

Additional key feature lighting upgrades to LED programmable, dimmable fixtures, including concealed lighting in tombs and uplighting in the Lady Chapel. Install new RGB colour-changing controllable lighting in the West Window and Lady Chapel Choir screen. Focus and program into previously installed Pharos control system.
